ALL ABOUT PMS
Premenstrual syndrome, commonly known as PMS, is a huge problem for many women between the ages of 20 to 40. It is estimated that 40 to 60% of menstruating women experience some form of PMS, affecting almost every system of the body. PMS is a hormonal disorder characterised by regularly recurring symptoms, usually occurring 2 to 14 days before menses and disappearing once the period begins. |
COMMON SYMPTOMS
Symptoms vary from woman to woman and can adversely impact the ability to work and relate with others. The intensity may range from mild to significantly debilitating. PMS symptoms can be classified into 3 categories: Physical
Emotional

CAUSES OF PMS
Causes may be nutritional, stress-related, genetic, psychological or environmental. Though the causes of PMS vary, there is usually a resulting decline in progesterone levels. An imbalance ultimately exists between estrogen and progesterone in the second part of the menstrual cycle. Other possible causes of PMS include a decrease in brain endorphins (which increases the sensation of pain) or a decrease of serotonin in the brain (which may affect mood). |
TESTING
Testing is usually done by judging the symptoms that occur between the time of ovulation and the first day of menstrual bleeding. Your levels of estrogen and progesterone can also be checked through blood or saliva tests, preferably on day 21 of your cycle. To assist your doctor in diagnosis, it is useful to keep a diary to record when and what symptoms often appear. |
TREATMENT
Bio-identical progesterone replacement therapy is a safe and effective way to correct a woman’s progesterone imbalance and relieve PMS symptoms. This natural hormone is not only manufactured from naturally-occurring plants such as soy and wild yam, but more importantly, it is molecularly identical to the progesterone produced in your body. Following a thorough review of your history, symptoms, and blood or saliva test, your doctor may prescribe a progesterone regimen unique for you. Natural progesterone can then be tailor-made and formulated to suit your specific requirements by a compounding pharmacist. It can be taken conveniently as a topical cream, troche (lozenge), or taken orally as capsules There are many benefits with the right amount of progesterone. Progesterone:

DO-IT-YOURSELF
Monitor Your Diet Healthy changes in your diet will help to reduce PMS symptoms and regulate your hormone levels. Instead of large meals, try eating smaller, frequent meals. Whole grains and proteins are good staples of a healthy PMS diet. Try to limit your intake of sugar and caffeine, as these can worsen symptoms. Stay Active! Regular exercise and physical activity are valuable for managing PMS symptoms. Quitting smoking is also a vital step to a healthy lifestyle. ...Slow Down Many women suffering from PMS are troubled by feelings of anxiety – a hectic and demanding pace makes it difficult to relax and unwind. Relaxation not only helps with PMS symptoms, it is great for your overall health and well-being. Nutritional Supplements
